Flexion-related low back pain
Flexion-related low back pain is the most common form of low back dysfunction. It is the main reason most people have low back pain. It involves everything from the simple disc bulge, to the more complex disc herniation and extrusions. Sciatica and stenosis can also result from disc dysfunction, but there are other causes for these conditions, which is why accurate assessment is vital. Similarly, while there is no such thing as degenerative disc disease, the discs – and other spinal structures – can degenerate, which may lead to a more general, rather than focused, type of bulge.
Most people with flexion-related back pain usually recover within 6-8 weeks, however, the majority have ongoing issues, which could be daily, or occur at regular intervals. This is because only the injury itself has been treated, not the underlying reason why the injury happened in the first place, or a one size fits all approach has been used.
A disc injury doesn’t mean low back pain for life. Once the mechanism of injury is understood and corrected, you can get back to life with confidence. Functional Low Back Rehab will give you the best lumbar disc injury rehab and exercises – it’s all we do.

it's time to get your life back
Flexion-related back pain doesn’t mean a life in pain. Disc injury doesn’t occur when you bend over to tie your shoes or pick something off the floor – it is the result of cumulative microtrauma from repetitive sub-failure magnitude loading in the previous months and years that gradually lowers the tissue failure threshold until a minor action results in injury and pain.
Simply, your previous movement habits are at fault. These movement habits may have also resulted in muscle weakness and incorrect motor patterns, which is the way the nervous system recruits muscles to perform a particular task. These also lower tissue capacity and lead to ongoing problems.
Dysfunctional movement and motor patterns may be simply habit, or the result of mobility restrictions and muscle weakness. Importantly, they can be assessed for and changed.
How we work
A thorough history and assessment will reveal mechanisms of injury, which can include poor movement patterns, dysfunctional motor patterns, muscle weakness, mobility restrictions, perturbed postures and inappropriate loads.
Rehabilitation focuses on first removing pain-causing motions, postures and loads, developing appropriate core stability, teaching better movement patterns and re-establishing correct motor patterns, addressing mobility restrictions and then increasing strength and restoring proprioception, as determined by your goals and needs.
Different occupations, daily activities and sporting pursuits require personalised rehabilitation. Most people may respond to simply removing the cause of pain, developing core stability and restoring motor patterns. Others may require a more comprehensive program.
At Functional Low Back Rehab, we don’t do one-size-fits-all rehabilitation.

failure isn't an option
There is no such thing as non-specific back pain or degenerative disc disease. Accurate assessment provides an accurate diagnosis, and the rehabilitation plan going forward.
Machine-based training and other systems fail to account for faulty movement patterns, strengthen the body with unnatural movements, fail to allow for nervous system control and ultimately fail when demand exceeds capacity.
At Functional Low Back Rehab, returning to your favourite activities and sports is a benchmark for success.

Does lifting technique matter? Yes. However, depending upon the object, individual mobility and strength, there are several methods to safely lift things from the floor or ground that minimize stress on the lumbar spine.

Does posture matter? Generally, yes. Poor posture - however that is defined - leads to a gradual deterioration in the quality of the lumbar spine tissues, which lowers their failure threshold.

Weak gluteal function may be a contributing factor to your lower back pain. Why? The reason is actually simple. If our glutes are weak, then the lumbar spine has to compensate to extend the hip.

Generally, there is no such thing as one best exercise. Exercise selection is based on current capacity and overall goals. But if there was just one exercise people should master...
