Flexion-related back pain
Flexion-related back pain is the most common form of lower back injury. Disc bulges can cause back pain by themselves, or lead to other conditions such as sciatica and stenosis.

Extension-related back pain

Does lifting technique matter? Yes. However, depending upon the object, individual mobility and strength, there are several methods to safely lift things from the floor or ground that minimize stress on the lumbar spine.

Does posture matter? Generally, yes. Poor posture - however that is defined - leads to a gradual deterioration in the quality of the lumbar spine tissues, which lowers their failure threshold.

Weak gluteal function may be a contributing factor to your lower back pain. Why? The reason is actually simple. If our glutes are weak, then the lumbar spine has to compensate to extend the hip.

Mark is a musculoskeletal therapist with more than ten years’ experience. He has worked for AFL clubs, with professional tennis players and golfers, state league hockey and soccer teams and multiple triathletes.
Mark has spent over five thousand hours of professional development on lumbar spine injury mechanisms, assessment and rehabilitation, with Australia, and the world’s, leading researchers and rehabilitation experts, including Professor Stuart McGill, Dr Andrew Lock, Australian strength coach Sebastian Oreb, and Queensland-based spinal neurosurgeon Mr David Johsnon.
I injured my back in 1991 sparring in karate, and managed it well until 2007, when a lengthy layoff from training due to arm surgery resulted in constant back pain for the next two years.
